Program Choreography Teacher

Jose Agudo

Jose started his career in Andalusia where he began performing as a Flamenco dancer. Slowly the world of contemporary dance became more visible as he worked throughout Europe performing with Charleroi/Danses, Ballet de Marseille, T.R.A.S.H, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and Akram Khan Company.

As a rehearsal director and assistant choreographer Jose has worked on several creations for Akram Khan Company, including DESH, iTMOi, TOROBAKA, Until the Lions, Chotto Desh, London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, and Sylvie Guillem’s farewell tour Life in Progress. Jose’s independent choreographic commissions include, Ki for Phoenix Dance Theatre; Selah for ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble; A Thousand Shepherds for ACE Dance and Music, later restaged with Cape Dance Company; Arctic for LCDS; 4m2 and Time/Dropper as associate artist at DEDA, amongst several other creations. Most recently, Jose opened his sell-out production Silk Road, a stunning triple bill of Flamenco, Kathak and contemporary dance, which will tour throughout 2018.

MASTER CHOREOGRAPHY

CONTEMPORARY, REPERTOIRE & RHYTHMS

Jose will teach a new creation during the program term during 16 of November till 04 of December. It is available for the dance artists who will choose the PERFORMANCE PATH.

Jose’s contemporary class is fast paced and aims to improve stamina through precise and simple movement patterns. The principles of the class are influenced by the diversity of traditional forms, which are brought into a contemporary dance context. There is a dynamic focus on the concept of ‘attack and release’. This technique allows joints to relax and energy to flow with maximum efficiency. Jose often uses counts to influence the dynamic of the movement and spinning to engage the core.

The choreographic process is strongly influenced by Asian movement forms and martial arts as well as rituals. Jose will explore ideas and repertoire from his past creations to transmit and offer something new and unique. The production will be influenced by the beautiful rhythms from Flamenco and Kathak traditions bringing them into a contemporary context. Participants will have fun learning and exploring these rhythmic structures and phrases at the heart of the workshop and enjoy a performance that will touch your essence in body, mind, heart and spirit.
