ROBERTO OLIVAN

INSTINCT AS A SOURCE OF MOVEMENT

This is an intense and dense group dynamic class. It is about energy, about constantly challenging your limits. Understanding what defines you as a dancer and pushing those boundaries over and over again. Allowing the environment to influence your dancing skills, refining tools to create new movement qualities and new rhythms. Digging deeper inside the range of your own personal dance vocabulary, becoming anyone or anything. Working with partnering, multi- directional micro- narrative movement to transforming as a whole group. Learning how to effectively be unpredictable, how to recycle energy, how to use the body as your primary tool. I guarantee a new process of study in which I go as a teacher and guidance parallel to your learning process and makes you do the step of digesting the work to get a completely new level.

Roberto will be teaching as part of the Choreography Workshops during EPW | IFE Festival in KL.

BIO

Spanish by origin, he studied at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Belgium. Roberto performed under the direction of renowned directors such as Robert Wilson, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker (ROSAS), Josse de Pauw and Tom Jansen.

In 2001 he formed his own company, the ROBERTO OLIVAN PERFORMING ARTS, to continue his research in all movement aspects. His company produced the performances ‘Natural Strange Days’, ‘Landmark’, ‘Homeland’, ‘De farra’, ‘Mermaid’s call’, ‘Universal Melody’, ‘A place to bury strangers’, and ‘Lonely Together’ among many others. Since the very beginning, what is reflected in the creations of Roberto Olivan is its singular vision of dance and the need to establish a dialogue with other artistic disciplines. (…) ” Roberto Olivan is the Catalan choreographer and Director of ROBERTO OLIVAN PERFORMING ARTS. He lives in Spain but works predominantly all over the world. Olivan’s work manages to bind together these seemingly opposing cultural influences, using a mix of artistic languages to create primeval, organic physical theatre full of wonderful contradictions. It is rooted firmly in his own origins and experience, and colored by those of the performers with whom he creates. Although well educated in many forms, in the art of control and precision, Olivan works not with the intellect, the head, but with emotion, physicality and love. He seeks to make his work accessible to audiences, combining the power and energy of circus with the harsh reality of the world in which we live. The result is a genuinely stimulating celebration, fantastical yet somehow heartfelt and down to earth.” **

He has created choreographic works for the Korean National University of Arts – KNUA (South Korea), CEPRODAC Company (Mexico), DE HELLING Musiektheater (Holland), VERTIGO Dance Company (Israel), Iceland Dance Company (Iceland), Galician Choreographic Centre (Spain), E.S.A.C. – Ecole Superiore des Arts du Cirque (Belgium), CODA 21 (Puerto Rico), National Dance Company (EL SALVADOR) and DADA VON BZDÜLÖW (Poland) … among many others.

Furthermore, he is also the founder and artistic director of DELTEBRE DANSA FESTIVAL initiated in 2004.
